He will be buried at the Azimpur graveyard later in the day.
The first namaj-e-janaza of Alam was held at the Azad Mosque in Gulshan after Asr prayers. Many distinguished persons, relatives, friends and admirers attended the janaza.
Alam’s second janaza was held at the BEXIMCO Media Complex at Tejgaon, where his former colleagues from The Independent and Independent Television, relatives and well-wishers joined the prayers.

Mahbubul Alam, former editor of The Independent, passed away at a hospital in Dhaka yesterday (Friday). He was 78. Also a former adviser to the caretaker government, Alam, who started his journalism career with the Associated Press of Pakistan in 1957, breathed his last at 9:25am at BIRDEM Hospital, where he was admitted on Tuesday. Doctors said he was suffering from several old-age complications. Born in 1936 in Munsiganj, Alam went on retirement on October 19 last year, after serving The Independent as editor for 18 years.
Alam left behind three daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Opposition Leader Raushan Ershad, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in separate messages, expressed deep shock at the death of Alam.
In his condolence message, President Abdul Hamid recalled Alam’s colourful professional life and his contribution to the development of journalism in the country.
